Tax Accountant - The McNair Group (Houston, TX)

Reports to: Director of Tax

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s of Science in Accounting degree preferred or completion of advanced accounting hours for CPA eligibility.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred or actively pursuing CPA exam.
  • One year of related work experience in tax accounting required.

Basic Function:

Responsible for various duties within the Tax department, including the preparation of federal and state tax returns, preparation of the work papers supporting the returns, researching tax issues that arise and being informed of federal and state tax law changes as they pertain to The McNair Group (“TMG”) entities.

Skills Required:

  • Working knowledge of tax preparation software such as GoSystem. 
  • Proficiency in analysis of financial data.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop solid working relationships at all levels across the organization.
  • Excellent attention to detail and an ability to produce high-quality, accurate work within designated deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and/or proprietary information.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office software applications.

Job Function (duties and responsibilities):

  • Assist with preparing federal tax returns including partnership, S-corporation, not-for-profit, individual and trust returns, multi-state tax returns and numerous Texas margin tax returns and all related items filed annually in addition to returns such as tax estimates, extensions and various state filing fees.
  • In connection with tax returns, prepare work papers supporting the conversion of financial records to tax basis records which are generally required for all entities.
  • Provide tax information, including tax estimates as well as Schedule K-1s, to external partners in several partnerships.
  • Utilize GoSystem tax return software and Great Plains accounting software.  
  • Prepare for outside consultants the detailed asset schedules and information necessary to prepare personal property tax renditions for various McNair Group entities.
  • Enter fixed asset additions for tax depreciation into GoSystem for various entities.
  • Research various tax issues as they arise throughout the year.  Also, keep informed of current federal and state tax law changes as they pertain to our entities.
  • Interact with financial accounting personnel, foundation personnel, and with investment group members.
  • The above responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and can be expected to be augmented as the work environment dictates.
  • The above responsibilities are shared with and under the supervision of the Vice President of Tax and the Tax Director.

Job Title:  Senior Accountant

Department:  Accounting

Reports to:  Director of Accounting

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from a four year accredited college or university required.
  • Minimum of four to five (4-5) years related experience in accounting/finance environment required.

Basic Function:

  • Responsible for general ledger functions and accountability, financial reporting and financial profitability analyses.
  • Perform various accounting functions including research and analysis for variances, payables, receivables, collections, general ledger entries and reconciliations across all accounts.
  • Perform special project analyses as required and participate in developing and producing various financial reports.

Skills Required:

  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of all Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and procedures required.
  • Strong accounting, quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Exhibit working knowledge of all general ledger functions and balancing intercompany accounts by verifying, allocating posting, reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies.
  • Ability to create financial accounting statements, reports and records by collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information.
  • Ability to exhibit high-level financial report writing skills in both Excel and FRx software applications.  Ability and working knowledge of SQL report writing a plus.
  • Intermediate to advanced working knowledge of major accounting software applications such as Microsoft Great Plains.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and/or tasks.
  • Excellent attention to detail and an ability to produce high-quality, accurate work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create and maintain solid working relationships across the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks with higher level of difficulty.
  • Ability to work with minimal up-front guidance and to take ownership of own work product.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and/or proprietary information.
  • Ability and internal drive to demonstrate a winning attitude and a strong work ethic in the performance of all job responsibilities.

Job Function (duties and responsibilities):

  • Conduct monthly general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Process capital expenditures and reconcile the fixed asset module.
  • Contribute to the budgeting and forecasting processes and preparation of budget-to-actual variance reports. 
  • Verify, allocate, post and reconcile accounts payable and receivable.
  • Participate in monthly and year-end close processes by recording entries required for analyzing and summarizing information for financial reporting purposes.
  • Participate in annual external audits by completing requested materials and assist in preparation of assigned schedules for annual audits.
  • Perform as back-up for general accountant position including processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable and purchase card processing.
  • Conform with and abide by all regulatory guidance and internal policies and procedures.
  • Document policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Perform various other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Accounting or the Vice President, Risk Management and Controller.
  • Position requires face-to-face personal interaction with staff, peers and other personnel; therefore, job responsibilities must be physically performed in TMG offices and not in a telecommuting manner.
